Die Journalisten erhofffen sich von den Lesern eine Sammlung kompakter und damit potentiell hochinfektiöser (und im journalisitschen Alltag überschriftentauglicher) Meme.

Interessant an diesem Ansatz ist, dass nicht geklärt ist, in welcher Richtung die Klischees wirken sollten:

• Wer wählt typischerweise so einen Studiengang?
• Was machen die Meme, mit denen die Studenten in diesem Studiengang konfrontiert werden, aus den Menschen?

Gilt “Ich mache mein Studium” oder müsste man eher erkennen “Mein Studium hat mich (mein “Ich”) gemacht”. Ein weiterer Aspekt wäre: “Ich passe mich meinen sozialen Umfeld meiner Kommilitonen an, weil ich in ihrem Kreis anerkannt sein möchte” versus “Ich möchte (auch) von Menschen gemocht werden, die nicht zum Kreis meiner Kommilitonen gehören und bin dafür breit deren Erwartungen zu entsprechen - und somit dem Klischee zu genügen”. Da sich die Selbstwahrnehmung der Studierenden eines Faches oftmals nicht mit deren Image in der Betrachtung Außenstehender deckt (der Meme-Generator auf Zeit-Online wäre ansonsten recht witzlos) ist ein sowohl-als-auch bei diesem Gegensatz nur Zynikern möglich. In der Biologie ist diese Basistheorie etabliert. Es bedarf keine “Schöpfers”, keines Masterplans, damit biologische Vielfalt entstehen kann.

Als Grundlage der Kulturentwicklung sind evolutionäre Mechanismen dagegen noch nicht durchgängig anerkannt. Möglicherweise spielt dabei auch die erneute Kränkung der Menschenheit (die vierte nach Sigmung Freud, 1. Kopernikanische, 2. Darwinsche, 3. Freudsche, 4. Memetische) eine Rolle: Die “Kulturschaffenden” wollen sich nur ungern als Werkzeuge der Meme verstehen.

Um so bemerkenswerter ist dieser Aufsatz von Dr. Christoph Henke “Memetik und Recht” der hier auch als pdf-Datei heruntergeladen werden kann.

Henke nutzt den memetischen Ansatz zur Bewertung von Gesetzen und den dadurch fixierten kulturellen Werten. Gesetze sind für Henke als Wenn-dann-Folgen (Wenn Du das tust/unterlässt, dann hat das genau diese Folgen)formulierte kulturelle Übereinkünfte. Je besser eine solche Wenn-dann-Folge den gesellschaftlichen Gegebenheiten angepasst ist, desto höher wird ihre Halbwertszeit sein. NAch der Auffassung von Henke besteht der Nutzen der Memetik für die Rechtstheorie vor allem darin, dass sie die kulturelle Evolution einschließlich der Rechtsevolution (über die Halbwertzeit der Gesetze, die kulturelle Normen codieren) quantifizierbar macht. Offensichtlich ist, dass in diesem Verlag die angewandte Memetik solider verankert ist als die theoretische.

Was Welt-Online beschreibt sind sicherlich recht erfolgreiche Meme, doch die Rduktion auf Bildern, Videos, Blogs, Texten oder ganzen Webseiten, die sich wie Lauffeuer über das Internet verbreiten, greift zu kurz. Dies sind zwar auch Meme, aber in dieser speziellen Form eher “Virals”. Virals ist ein Begriff aus der Werbung und beschreibt genau solche, oft durch Witz und/oder Verfremdung oder schlicht durch Prominenz aufgrund häufiger Präsenz (Paris Hilton Effekt) sich durch Weiterempfehlung per Link oder “Like” expotentiell verbreitende Meme.

Ein weiteres gutes Beispiel sind die Katzebilder im Internet. Dabei geht es nicht darum Bilder von Katzen zu finden, es ist vielmehr der Erfolg ein “neues” “noch niedlichers” Katzenbild gefunden/aufgenommen zu haben und vor allen anderen im persönlichen Mailverteiler oder Facebook-Freundeskreis zu verbreiten. Der Verbreitungssport wird selbst zum Mem, unabhängig vom Inhalt der verbreiteten Meme. Dadurch gewinnen die Virals eine besondere memetische Dynamik, darin liegt aber auch ihr Risiko.

Dass durch Suchen und Posten interessanter Meme der soziale Status verbessert werden kann, ist selbst ein Mem. Es ist Förderer der Verbreitung von Virals. Eine tatsächliche Steigerung des Sozialstatus erfährt nur, wer Virals zur Weiterleitung auswählt, die von anderen gerne aufgenommen und ebenfalls weitergeleitet werden. Dies ist nun aber auch genau der Effekt, der ein Viral erfolgreich macht. Hier ist eine sich wechselseit verstärkende memetische Evolution zu erwarten.

Ein Viral bleibt so lange erfolgreich, wie es der Statusoptimierung des Suchers und Versenders dient. Irgendwann ist aber die “Idee ausgelutscht” der “Witz hat einen Bart” oder “Kätzchen sind langweilig und doof”. Das ehemals erfolgreiche Viral geht zugrunde, das Mem für suchen und Posten zur Statusoptimierung bleibt aber vital. Es ist aber nur dann auch zukünftig erfolgreich, wenn es sich der neuen memetischen Mode zuwendet.

Da der memetische Phänotyp immer eine Teilmenge des Memotyps ist kann ein biologischer Organismus mehrere memetische Organismen darstellen, je nachdem wie die Parzellierung des Memeotyps erfolgt. Wenn ein Mensch heute die eine und morgen die entgegengesetzte Meinung vertritt, so bleibt er biologisch und als Memotyp der selbe, als memetischer Phänotyp und damit auch memetischer Organismus ist er aber ein anderer geworden.

Form und Funktion eines biologischen Organismus werden durch seine Gene bestimmt. Ein Gen codiert dabei ein morphologische, physiologische oder - folgt man der Soziobiologie - psychologisches Merkmal* des Organismus. Zumeist besteht das Genom, die Gesamtheit der genetischen Information**, aus zwei Chromosomensätzen***: Einem von der Mutter und einem vom Vater. Für jedes Gen liegen im Organismus also zwei Informationen vor, eine mütterliche und eine väterliche, die Allele. Die Gesamtheit dieser Information wird als Genotyp des Organismus bezeichnet.

Trotz doppelter Information zeigt jeder Organismus aber nur eine Ausprägung des Merkmals. Eines der Allele setzt sich gegen das andere durch (braune Augen sind dominant gegenüber blauen Augen), seltener treten Mischformen eines Merkmals auf (mehrfarbiges Fell). Die Gesamtheit der Merkmale eines Organismus, der Phänotyp, repräsentiert also nur rund die Hälfte des Informationsgehalts seines Genoms.

Die evolutionäre Selektion greift am Organismus, am Phänotyp an. Hier entscheidet sich welcher Organismus sich fortpflanzen kann und welcher nicht. Kommt es zur Fortpflanzung werden von dem Organismus Geschlechtszellen eingebracht, die nach dem Zufallsprinzip aus den Allelen des Genotyps komponiert wurden. Es ist dem nach nicht sichergestellt, dass die Allele, die einen Organismus im Wettstreit der Selektion erfolgreich gemacht haben auch an dessen Nachkommen weitergegeben werden. Evolutionär erfolgreich ist ein Organismus also nicht dann, wenn er erfolgreich Nachkommen zeugt, sondern, wenn deren genetische Ausstattung sie ebenfalls wieder erfolgreich sein lässt. Gradmesser für den evolutionären Erfolg sind Enkel und Urenkel, nicht Kinder****.

Ein memetischer Organismus sollte in Allegorie zum genetischen Organismus a) memetischer Phänotyp sein, b) Teil eines memetischen Genotyps sein, c) Angriffspunkt der memetischen Selektion sein.

* Genau genommen codiert ein Gen ein Polypeptid. Proteine bestehen aus einem oder mehreren Polypeptiden. Erst das Zusammenspiel der Wirkung mehrerer Proteine (Enzyme) führt zur Herausbildung der Eigenschaften des Organismus.

Ein Werbeslogan, eine Erkennungsmelodie enthält zwar noch weniger Informationsquanten, hier handelt es sich jedoch bereits um Meme.

Meme sind Replikatoren. Meme unterliegen evolutionären Mechanismen, d.h. die vier Kriterien der darwinschen Evolution gelten auch für Meme: 1. Überproduktion, 2. Rekombination, 3. Variation, 4. Selektion. Überproduktion heißt, dass die Zahl der Meme die Aufnahmekapazität der ansprechbaren Gehirne erheblich übersteigt. Rekombination bedeutet, dass es einen memetischen Genotyp (Memotyp**) und einen memetischen Phänotyp (Soziotyp) gibt, wobei der Genotyp “väterliche” und “mütterliche” Merkmale tragt, der Phänotyp aber zumeist nur eine der Varianten zeigt, gelegentlich können Mischformen auftreten. Nun kenne wir zwar den “Vater des Gedankens” aber Meme mendeln*** nicht, sie haben nicht einen Vater und eine Mutter. Dennoch ist zu unterscheiden zwischen den Memen die das Gedankengebäude eines Individuums bilden (Genotyp) und den kommunizierten, d.h. zur Imitation durch andere Individuen präsentierten Meme (Phänotyp). Wie bei biologisch-darwinschen Evolution entscheidet auch bei der memetisch-darwinschen Evolution die Zusammensetzung im Genotyp darüber ob ein Mem im Phänotyp ausgebildet wird. Variation bedeutet, dass sich die Meme in ihrem Phänotyp unterscheiden. An diesen Unterschieden am memetischen Phänotyp setzt die Selektion an. Nur die für andere Gehirne resp. die hier bereits etablierten Gedankengebäude attraktiven Meme haben eine Chance imitiert zu werden.

Meme können sich zu Memplexen zusammenschließen, die andere Eigenschaften haben als die Summe der Meme aus denen sie gebildet wurden. Memeplexe sind beispielsweise eine politische Überzeugung, eine ästhetische Bildung, ein Wissensgebiet, das Beherrschen eines Musikinstrumentes. Hier genügt es nicht ein paar politische Statements zu kennen, auf einzelne Kulturerlebnisse zu verweisen, eklektizistisches Wissen zu memorieren oder Etüden zu Gehör bringen zu können. Memplexe entstehen durch die Integration einzelner Meme zu einer neuen Entität.

Für ein Mem ist eine “Zielgruppe” ein idealer Verbreitungsraum - oder definieren sich Zielgruppen erst durch ihre memetische Homogenität und nicht durch gleichförmige Lebensumstände?

Eine Frage, die sich aufdrängt, wenn man versucht die Zielgruppe der Ü-60-Jährigen zu definieren*. Obwohl die Unterschiede in der Alltagsgestaltung und auch in der finanziellen Ausstattung, sprich den Optionen zur Alltagsgestaltung, eher geringer als bei den noch Erwerbstätigen sind, tut sich die Werbe- und Mediabranche schwer diese wachsende Bevölkerungsgruppe mit ihren gewohnten Kriterien als Zielgruppe zu beschreiben und zu segmentieren.

Entscheidend scheint mir dabei zu sein, dass ältere Menschen nicht mehr bereit sind ihr memetisches Inventar (internen Mempool) mit der selben Vehemenz und Konsequenz in Frage zu stellen, wie dies bei Jüngeren der Fall ist. Die erfolgreichsten Meme sind für alle Hosts gleichermaßen präsent, doch wer noch im Berufsleben steht, sieht sich in Penetranz den Baits und Hooks aktueller Meme ausgesetzt und kann sich der Infektionen kaum erwehren. Der Memplex “Zeitgeist” infiziert sukzessive alle, die auf offene Antennen angewiesen sind.

Ältere Menschen können sich diesen Infektionen entziehen, dabei werden zwei Mechanismen aktiv:
Der interne Mempool älterer Menschen hat sich über die Jahrzehnte zu einem geschlossenen, widerspruchslosen Weltbild gefügt. Neuartige Meme würde diese Geschlossenheit gefährden, sie haben deshalb ohne effektiven Bait kaum eine Chance. In der Memetik spricht man von einem Schildeffekt. Dieser Schildeffekt gewinnt an Effizienz, wenn die neuen Meme sich einer modernen Sprache oder modernen Medien bedienen, die einer Ausbreitung unter Jüngeren durchaus förderlich sein kann (Aktualitäts-Code), bei Älteren aber Reaktanz oder Unverständnis provoziert - ein absolutes Infektionshemmnis.

Auf der anderen Seite definieren sich ältere Menschen auch weniger über ihre Pläne als über ihre Erfahrungen. Widersprüche zwischen externen und internem Mempool werden nicht mehr durch die Integration neuer Meme aufgelöst, sondern durch das Vermeiden der Konfrontation mit widerspruchsträchtigen Situationen. So können memetische Strukturkrisen effektiv vermieden werden, der Preis dafür ist ein Ausblenden von all jenen aktuellen Zeitgeist-Memen, die sich nicht widerspruchslos in den internen Mempool integrieren lassen. Dabei gibt es von Host zu Host individuelle Unterschiede wie der interne Mempool ausgestaltet ist und in der Wahl der biographischen Zeitpunktens, wann der internen Mempool geschlossen wird.

Zusammenfassend bedeutet dies, dass sich die Gesamtheit der Ü-60-Jährigen nicht mit den klassischen Clustern der Zielgruppendefinition beschreiben lässt. Ein memetischer Kommunikations-Ansatz wird versuchen den Schildeffekt zu neutralisieren. Beim Mem-Merging werden beispielsweise etablierte Memplex durch möglichst kleine neue Meme (mit der gewünschten Message) angereichert. Diese Technik vermeidet die Konfrontation mit den vorhandenen Memen. Voraussetzung ist jedoch ein Bait, das auf den jeweiligen Memplex hin optimiert wurde.
